Many patients are troubled by dilatation of superficial small veins typically on their legs although also occasionally on the face. Careful assessment is necessary for each patient to be sure that more significant issues with the veins of the leg are not present. Dr. Murphy's training in both General and Plastic surgery assures each patient that their needs related to vascular issues are being addressed. Treatment Modality
Treatment of these small veins is accomplished through a combination of injection and laser treatments. The selection of modality depends on the size of the vessels and their location. Generally at the time of first treatment the spider veins are a bit larger and typically treated with injection. As treatment progresses smaller redder vessels are cleaned up with laser treatment. The laser produces a wavelength of light absorbed by the blood in the vessel and obliterates the vein. Patients must be aware that treatment of spider veins typically involves a number of treatments to achieve full clearing and that recurrence of the veins over time is typical.
Treatment and Recovery Time
Each treatment is performed in the office and takes approximately thirty minutes. Patients are advised to take it easy at home the night of the treatment with elevation of the extremity. Bruising is typical and will take up to 4 or 5 weeks to settle down.
