The skin of the insides of the legs is typically thinner and less likely to shrink up on its own after major weight loss, and as the skin ages it typically becomes lax and wrinkly. Skin in this area lacks the elasticity of skin elsewhere on the body. In a large number of patients the only way to improve the appearance of this area is to remove the extra skin. This is called a medial thigh lift.

Excess medial thigh tissue can typically be removed through a groin crease incision. This will improve the contour of the upper inner thigh and relieve the feeling of the skin rubbing together. For some patients the degree of improvement required is so profound that an additional incision extending along the inside of the thigh, even all the way to the knee, is required. This additional incision is more typically needed in weight loss patients.

Recovery
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and sometimes patients spend a night in the hospital. Recovery is limited by discomfort and some difficulty getting around but most patients are back to non-strenuous activity by a week or 10 days. Thigh lifts are fairly intense procedures with some scarring and recovery but the vast majority of patients feel it is worthwhile due to the improvement in appearance and how they look better in clothes. Their pants just fit better.
